I WAS THEIR AMERICAN DREAM by Malaka Gharib

JACK VILLANUEVA Engages

I Was Their American Dream by Malaka Gharib
(Penguin Random House / Clarkson Potter, 2019)

Jack Villanueva, 8-years-old, loves to stay in bed, snuggle with all of his plushies under the fluffy blankets, and read books. Asked about the book he is currently reading with his Mama or Papa at night, this is what he has to say:

“My favorite word in the whole book is 'baon'. When Papa read this to me, he said 'bacon'. He doesn't know what baon is but I do! And now he does. I want bacon for baon!”

“My favorite page is The FUN PAGE: Evil Sand Trap. I am going to do this next time we go to the beach. (Evil laugh right here.)”

“Malaka is right. Monggo looks like sludge... but I like it, especially with pork belly.”

“I also like the Falafel Surprise (inside there's a little chunk of spam, Ha-ha-ha!). I LOVE Spam. It's the only thing I know how to cook on my own. I wish I could eat it every day.”

THANK YOU for the book, Malaka! Much love from Jack (and his Filipina mama).
